VCAD Campus Turns Eco: LafargeHolcim Awards

Congratulations are in order to a group of VCAD Interior Design students, and their Eco Design instructor, for submitting a sustainable design of VCAD Vancouver’s campus to the LafargeHolcim Awards Competition.

The sustainable design project, VCAD Campus Turns Eco, includes state-of-the-art design and technical elements such as beetle wood seating, water filtration systems and green walls, recycled steel, and electric car underground parking to name a few.

Through rain water collection, the water filtration system will filter out the “waste water” and use the clean water to grow and harvest food and vegetables for local communities.

VCAD Campus Turns Eco is currently being reviewed by an independent jury, across five regions in the world (Europe, North America, Latin America, Middle East & Africa, and Asia Pacific) to judge the contestants on their efforts to create a sustainable construction plan.

Due to COVID-19, the winner will now be announced in 2021, and these regional juries will meet on a virtual panel; each with varied expertise in business, science, or community backgrounds.

The LafargeHolcim Foundation was created in 2003 to raise awareness of the important role that architecture, engineering, urban planning and the building industry have in achieving a more sustainable future. The LafargeHolcim Awards is one of the most significant competitions for sustainable design in the world. This international competition recognizes projects and visionary concepts that go beyond balancing environmental performance, social responsibility, and economic growth, thereby exemplifying architectural excellence and a high degree of transferability.
